About

Migrant Mothers is a project that aims to tell the story of women who came to live in Australia from elsewhere in the world, and built a life here. A series of images and a transcribed interview aims to show commonalities of the lives of migrant women/mothers regardless of their origin or background.

The title “Migrant Mother” is borrowed from the title of Dorothea Lange’s famous image of a mother and her children during the years of the Great Depression. It has become symbolic of the plight of the agricultural workers during that time.

About the photographer

Charlene Winfred came to live in Perth from Singapore in 1999, and has been trying to figure out how (or if) she fit into Australia ever since. This project was inspired by the ongoing narratives of the women who are important to her – mother, sisters, close friends, who have all made a home away from the place of their birth, negotiating new environment, cultures, and different sets of rules in making a home for their families.

Special thanks go to Smita Lall, who introduced some provocative ideas on empowerment, motherhood, and its role in womanhood.
